The former economic development Minister Basil Rajapakse has complained that complainants have failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the allegations leveled against him alleging that he had misused government funds by providing housing assistance to Divi Neguma beneficiaries at a cost of Rs. 2,992 million belonging to the Divineguma Development Fund during the 2015 Presidential Election.

However, as the Police Financial Crimes Division has not taken steps to record a statement from the original complainant, he noted that there was a serious error in the investigation.

Rajapaksa made these comments in his written submissions filed through his lawyers to the Colombo Hight Court requesting that he be acquitted and released without summoning the defendant in the case.

The original complainant in the case was Ananda Wijepala, the director of the anti-corruption committee set up during the previous government.
