The Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera speaking at a discussion held with the officials of the Central Environmental Authority noted that last week, nearly 100 water samples tested in a river in Ecuador, were found to be infected with the Covid-19 virus.
“The biggest problem is that people dispose their masks without following any safety precautions and throw them away as they see fit. Due to the heavy rains these days, the Covid-19 virus could mix with the rivers and streams”, the Minister said.
He said that it could pose a serious health risk if the virus spreads to other parts of the country, including the river system.
He added that “local authorities should be instructed to strictly enforce the COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines currently being prepared by the Central Environmental Authority. The addition of 06 million masks per day to the landfill means 180 million masks are added per month.
