Minister of Education Prof. GL Peiris stated that a formal mechanism was put in place for the admission of students and teachers to Madrasa schools at the time President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa functioned as the Defense Secretary, noting that this practice was completely disrupted after the Good Governance Government took over.

Responding to a question raised by Parliamentarian Kavinda Jayawardena in Parliament today (20 Nov), he said that those coming to Sri Lanka from abroad seeking visas to teach in Madrasa schools should be closely monitored and that it was irresponsible to employ such persons to teach in schools without looking into the background and past behavior.

The Minister pointed out that the Ministry of Education now monitors all matters pertaining to Madrasa schools including the courses taught and the manner in which students are enrolled.

Speaking further, he said that the Minister of Education has a duty to supervise Madrasa schools and that he will stand by that duty.
