The National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) has decided to implement a new program to identify drivers who use narcotic substances, officials said.

Complaints were received regarding certain heavy vehicle and passenger bus drivers using drugs, Dr. Savindra Gamage, the Chairman of the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) told News 1st on Wednesday (Mar. 03).

Thereby, Dr. Gamage pointed out that this is a serious threat to the safety of passengers and pedestrians.

The necessary provisions are being prepared on the advice of the Attorney-General with regard to the special equipment that can be used to identify motorists who drive under the influence and the procedure that should be followed against such individuals, he further noted.

According to NTMI Chairman – Dr. Savindra Gamage, the new program will be implemented within the next few months.
