The Supreme Court ordered the reconsideration of a fundamental rights petition filed seeking the repeal of Regulation 61 relating to the 24-hour cremation of Covid19 bodies yesterday, filed by former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s Muslim Makkal Party, 12 members of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Party, including its leader Rauf Hakeem and a relative of a person who died of coronavirus.

The petitioners claim that the bodies of those who die of Covid-19 disease, (especially Muslims) should be allowed to be buried according to their usual religious rites.

The petition was taken up before a three-judge bench comprising Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Abrew and Gamini Amarasekera.
