Sri Lanka’s Navy said it had rescued seven crew members of an Indian merchant vessel which sank on route to the Maldives after they were found adrift off the Southern coast of Sri Lanka.

The crew of the sunken vessel Maria Iuruidaya was spotted by a Sri Lankan fishing vessel Sahan Putha in a life raft 68 nautical miles off Galle, the Sri Lanka Navy said.

The Navy had issued an alert to all merchant vessels and patrol craft to be on the lookout after Maldivian authorities had informed Sri Lanka that the Indian merchant vessel was in trouble.
