Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella said that the United National Party (UNP) will teach a lesson to all those media outlets that disseminate fake news after 10 February.

He made this comment during a rally held in Kandy in support of UNP candidates contesting the 2018 Local Government (LG) polls.
Kiriella predicted that all LG bodies in the Kandy District will be swept by his Party during the upcoming election. He said that during the last Presidential Polls held in the United States, the majority of its media outlets had published fake news items about President Donald Trump but in the end it was Trump who had prevailed.

The Minister said that the media outlets ought to function within limits and should not unduly cross that line for if they do, the Government would be forced to take strict measures against such institutions.

He said that the UNP will not think twice before teaching a lesson to certain media outlets which have made a habit of distributing fake news which can deceive the public and do damage to the country’s reputation as well.
