Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called on women to vote for the UNP at the upcoming Local Polls, pointing out that they are assured of a better future under a UNP-led government.

Although women played a major role in the main income earning sectors of foreign employment, garments and tea and out numbered males population wise, they were under represented at local provincial and national assemblies, the PM said, addressing the UNP Central Organisation in the Kotte Electorate, at Sirikotha recently.

“It is to rectify this anomaly that we campaigned for minimum representation for women from Pradeshiya Sabha level upwards,” the PM noted, adding that they were now assured of 25 percent representation at all three tiers of government.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had not only failed to ensure greater women’s representation but also insulted them by not dong anything to discipline the then Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, who boasted to having affairs with around 100 women, the PM said.
